Music Activities @Home : Mini- Mozarts

Mini Mozarts is one of the most fun music activities for kids because it lets them create their own music. It’s another one of those activities that introduces children to music thought without forcing the idea of learning. For parents, it's also cool to watch because we never know what they’re going to come up with. This fun activity is appropriate for children ages 6 and up. Challenge your child to write their music, or maybe pull a Jackson 5 and have the family compose some music together.

You will need:

  • Crayons, colored pencils, or markers

  • Paper

  • Index cards or construction paper

How to play:

Mini Mozarts is an activity in which children get to show off their creative sides by composing their own music. Basically, patterns, we will be creating a string of “notes” that make a song. Using your index cards, on one side have children create their own symbol. Each symbol will represent a corresponding sound. Make multiples of each symbol so you have enough for to create a pattern. Have your child arrange the symbols they made and using the corresponding sounds, they have composed their first song!

Some fun tips:

If you have a computer with a Sound Recorder it might be cool to record the “instrumental version” and then have your child go back over and write lyrics. I have a habit of listening to instrumental music and my daughter loves to sing over it, and sometimes I’m surprised at how well she’s able to make it sound like she’s singing a song she knows. You may also try introducing your kids to different videos of voice exercises or even things like beatboxing just to get those creative sound juices flowing. You may discover your child has some hidden talent.

Let us know how your family enjoyed these five fun music activities for all families. Share with another family who you know loves music as much as you.
